You Have a Treat in Store
This is on my list of Most Favorite Books Ever! I've looked for SHADY GROVE for years as a gift for people I love, but it's been long out of print. Thank goodness it's again available. The book, which is about the Sudley Fowler family of Broke Neck, Ky, including their relationships--regular and irregular---moonshining, Lonelyhearts letters, government men, picking and grinning, hound dogs, getting "on the draw," and that old time relgion.
Mostly, though, it's about a way of life unique in all the world, and there's a belly laugh on every page.
Oh, gentlemen, you are mortally going to love this one!

You can't read this book without laughing out loud.
I love this book. It is the funniest book that I have ever read. I could just picture them running up on that porch in that old car that was out of control. Every time I get slightly depressed, I re-read this book. I will always have a copy. It's good medicine.

This is the funniest book I have ever read.
This is the funniest book I have ever read. After reading the first page, I could not put it down. I wanted to know why that preacher wound up with a guitar around his neck. I wanted to know why the television crew was there in Broke Neck. This book is for everyone who enjoys a good laugh. It is just pure fun from the first page to the last.

Stars of India - Travels in Search of Astrologers and Fortune Tellers
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (01 October, 1998)
Author: Peter Holt
Average review score:

Good.
Really enjoyed this. Surprised it hasn't done better

A great book about the history of astrology.
As an astrologer myself I found this an excellent book for telling one about the history of astrology and how it originated in India. There are an incredible number of different types of predicition written about here, and it all makes run of the mill Western astrology look mighty tame.

Excellent new age travelogue about the mysteries of India.
A very enjoyable read this. Holt interviews endless different kinds of experts in prediction, as well as asking about his own future. The Rajastani shadow reader is fascinating, as is the author's account of the Asta Mangela, a South Indian astrological ceremony to discover what is going wrong with a family or a temple. Highly recommended.

Thundering Zeus: The Making of Hellenistic Bactria (Hellenistic Culture and Society, 32)
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (April, 1999)
Author: Frank Lee Holt
Average review score:

Illuminating Bactrian Beginnings Through Coinage
Holt does an excellent job of updating the Beginnings of the Hellenistic Bactrian kingdom. His book is a much needed repair of the misinformation spread in the beginning of Tarn's otherwise enjoyable book The Greeks in Bactria and India. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Jumpin Jehoshaphat
Frank Holt continues his assault on the deity of Alexander in this well-researched followup to "Alexander the Great and Bactria." Holt looks at the foundation and early history of Hellenistic Bactria, starting with the Diadochi. His analysis of the data - including a careful reappraisal of the oft misleading numistics - is fairly convincing. A good book for anyone interested in Central Asia in antiquity, ancient India, and modern historiography of Alexander of Macedon.

Splendid.
A full effort employing a variety of source materials, good methodology, and inviting prose.

Baby's Day Out in Southern California: Fun Places to Go With Babies and Toddlers

A Survival book for the S. Cal. Parent
Whether you are from S. Cal or just visiting, this is the book for anyone wanting to have an enjoyable day with their children in Southern California. It is filled with ideas and facts about more than just the usual L.A. attractions. And it is geared toward the parent with young children and what is fun and appropriate for them. After I used it once, I don't go anywhere without this book. I just leave it in the car. You'll never be at a loss for places to go and the best way to see them. It is obvious that Dr. Holt did her research and has been to all of these places firsthand. There are no blind recommendations and her ideas for fun and free adventures really inspired me to get out there and explore with my children. Buy this book and you are on the road to years of hassle free outings with your kids.

A Great Guide For Creating Adventure and Wonderful Memories
Where was this book when I had my first child? This book is a great way to help plan fun outings with little kids, especially if you're new to parenting or Southern California. It's well organized, very thorough, easy to use, and formatted so that you can get an overview without getting bogged down in too much detail. I like how you can check out the events that occur by month, like the harvest festivals or holiday events. I highly recommend this book for new moms and moms who are looking for adventure and wonderful memories with their kids.

A birder's guide to southeastern arizona
Taylor's updated version is an essential tool for anyone who is not familiar with s.e. arizona, and extremely helpful for those who are. It contains detailed descriptions of birding areas, maps, species to expect at different times of the year, and more. Rick takes you right to the hard-to-find Arizona specialties, as well as all the rest, and does it in an enjoyable manner. This book is fun to read even after leaving Arizona. You will not be disappointed with this one!

Where, what and when. THE book for birding SE Arizona!
This is a great resource for planning and executing a birding expedition to southeast Arizona. Excellent maps, detailed species accounts, and helpful directions and resource listings. This book tells you what specialties to look for at specific locations and when they are most likely to be found there. A great guide for birding southeast Arizona, from roadside birding to backcountry hiking. I especially appreciate the tear out maps of trails and inside cover maps of locations and ecoregions.

A Birder's Guide to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas (Lane ABA Birdfinding Guides Ser #414
Published in Paperback by American Birding Association Sales (January, 1992)
Author: Harold R. Holt
Average review score:

Excellent guide
Holt's book is very helpful for birding Texas, especially when used in conjunction with other books. Unfortunately, lodging is only briefly mentioned, so you must use other resources to plan your trip. The maps are excellent and there is a checklist in the back with bird species, locations, abundance, and months present. There is also a listing of species with details on specialties (e.g. Elegant trogon- A rare visitor, with three records at Big Bend and a smattering of records for the Lower Valley. The most recent sighting was in late January 1990.) This book covers the RGV from Brownsville to El Paso, including the Guadalupe Mountains, Davis Mountains, and Edwards Plateau. The format is different from some other ABA books, for instance there is not a separate column listing expected sightings for each area.

new publication - 1998 or 1999
I am looking for a place to buy the new publication. The new author might be Mark Lockwood. Publisher is same - American Birding Association

Bowhunting Equipment & Skills (Complete Hunter)
Published in Hardcover by Creative Publishing International (January, 1997)
Authors: Dwight R. Schuh, G. Fred Asbell, Dave Holt, M. R. James, Complete Hunter, and Bowhunter Magazine
Average review score:

Bows, Arrows and Hunting for Dummies
This book is the result of the authors bringing decades of personal field experience, not "war stories", to all who read it. Add to that the up-to-date tech information provided, the complicatied made simple of moderen archery equipment setup and the intricacies of traditional archery clearly explained makes this book a valuble addition to your archery and hunting library.
If I had to choose only one book to help me understand the how-to and realationships between bow, arrow, accessory equipment, hunter and quarry this would be the one.

Excellent Book!
This book has helped me improve my bowhunting skills dramatically! I know how to aim better and shoot more consistently. I recommend this book to anyone interested in bowhunting.

Can You See Me? an Unveiling of the Human Spirit
Published in Hardcover by Chiaro Publishing (01 October, 2001)
Author: Karen Holt
Average review score:

does encapsulate the spirit
a wonderfully crafted collection by a woman who is immensely talented. MS. Holt captures images in time that reflect much depth in emotion and the little surprises in life that seem to keep us going. She seems sincerely moved by a deep spirit and imbues her work with a rare tenderness and keen eye for nuances that many of us would miss.

Her work has rich textures and soothing colors. I also pick up on an attentiveness to form in landscape and of the human body.

Like most great artists, her vision becomes our gift to behold and inspire us in multiple ways.

An ongoing job that is so well done.

A Beautiful Creation
The book is of the highest quality. Too often people try and cut corners and they don't do justice to their work because of it. Can You See Me? An Unveiling of the Human Spirit is as lovely a book as the cover promises.

This is a powerful book in countless ways. What struck me first were the powerful paintings. Oh what talent! I almost looked past the words in my eagerness to get to more pictures. I'm so glad I didn't. Anyone and everyone can relate to the powerful words in the poetry and prose. I am not a poetry person but this is more than poetry. This is truth, transparent and haunting.

The layout is wonderful with tons of white space to showcase the pictures and set off the words. I loved the little touches like the screened words in a larger font. This book is simply a visual treat.

Karen's own honesty about difficult issues in her life inspires me to face my issues. This is a book I will keep where others can find and enjoy this simple and sincere blending of art and words.

Celebrate! With Little Quilts
Published in Paperback by Martingale & Co Inc (November, 1995)
Authors: Alice Berg, Mary Ellen Von Holt, and Sylvia Johnson
Average review score:

beautiful production
These publishers are the greatest. They consistently top the competition. This book offers so many visual gifts to its readers, and since the quilts are small, the projects are producable within a reasonable amount of time. I just let my eyes meander through the book, and I am inspired to get back to the sewing machine. It is written in a friendly style, without the typical clinical and off putting language that we find in so many other quilt books. The quilts are photographed so clearly with such vibrant colors. I dare anyone to read this book, and not turn directly to her fabric stash and begin dreaming of the next project!

You'll want to make EVERY quilt in this book!
This is such a terrific book if you would like to fill your house with quilts in a short time! All of the quilts in the "Little Quilt" collection are a wonderful addition to any quilt library...

The Changeling

Author: Philippa Carr
Average review score:

Not my fave PC book, but it comes pretty close!
I loved Victoria Holt books but I disliked the Jean Plaidys; so when I found out there was another name and that my aunt had most of the books, I was excited! I'm missing the first three and my series ends with this one, but I'll find the first and last books someday.

"Song of the Siren" is my favorite PC book, and "The Changeling" probably comes pretty close. I didn't expect the ending!!

Great book, great series. I'm eagerly awaiting the others!!

Philippa Carr is also known as Victoria Holt !
A story of love, envy, passion and betrayal, by Britain's famed historical romance novelist. Fatherless since birth, young Rebecca Mandeville soon becomes motherless as well, left with her infant sister, Belinda, in the custody of Benedict Lansdon, the stepfather she despises. As Rebecca grows into a clever beauty and Belinda into a hellion determined to get her way at all costs, another child, Lucie, is added to the household. Together they make a complex triangle laced with affection but also with jealousy. And when Benedict remarries, family tensions erupt in one catastrophe after another- blackmail, scandal, devastating accusations and the hint of passion made violent. But it isn't until Benedict's new wife disappears, amid cries of murder, that Rebecca and Benedict, together, are able to pick up the pieces of the shattered family to which both are bound. Rich in historical detail, this book is an evocative portrait of victorian England by one of England's greatest storytellers. You won't be disappointed !
